Energy from electricity, heat, gas and liquor Green electricity and district heating for Salzburg
Today, various power plants at the AustroCel Hallein site provide the operations with production steam and supply green electricity and district heating to the public grid. One of these is the biomass heat and power plant (BMHKW), which makes a significant contribution to achieving the climate goals in Austria. Fossil fuels such as natural gas are only used for back-up firing when starting up our systems subsequent to shutdowns. Biogenic fuels now account for more than 99 percent of total consumption at the site.
From the filtrates of the pulp mill, in an innovative process which entails fermentation, we produce biogas, which we have also been processing into green electricity and district heating at a co-generation plant since December 2016. This makes the plant one of the largest producers of bioenergy in Austria, supplying 28,000 households in the region with green electricity and 13,000 households with district heating.
